About Ss Mary & Everilda, Everingham
Ss Mary & Everilda, Everingham is a Roman Catholic church near York in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Middlesbrough and has Grade I listed status. Although the Everingham parish closed in 2004, the diocese continues to use the church and Mass is celebrated there regularly. A Catholic cemetery adjoins the building.
The church was erected from 1836 to 1839 for William Constable-Maxwell, whose family maintained its Catholic faith after the Reformation. Agostino Giorgioli, a Roman architect, produced the Italianate design, while John Harper of York oversaw construction. Inside, Corinthian columns line the nave beneath a coffered barrel vault, leading towards an apsidal sanctuary with a half-dome. Statues of the Apostles and reliefs depicting events from Christ’s life are complemented by marble, granite, porphyry, imitation marble and gilding. The contemporary Charles Allen organ stands in a mahogany case on the raised western gallery.
