About St Helen's Church, Wheldrake
St Helen's Church, Wheldrake is the Church of England parish church serving the village, south-east of York in North Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The earliest surviving feature is the limestone tower, first built during the 14th century and reconstructed with larger masonry in the following century. It rises in two sections and has modest diagonal supports. After the building fell into serious disrepair, the nave was replaced in brick in 1779, with rounded windows and an apse. A 13th-century font survives, while a refurbishment in 1874 introduced much of the present Gothic-style interior. Robert Thompson carved the pulpit and altar fittings in 1910. During the 1970s, clear glazing replaced Victorian stained glass.
