About St Nicholas
St Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church in Bawtry, within Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Dedicated to the patron saint of seafarers, it once served as a landmark for vessels approaching the nearby River Idle wharves. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and belongs to the parish of Bawtry with Austerfield.
Work began around 1189–90, and the church opened in about 1200. Its varied fabric includes Norman elements, Perpendicular additions and local magnesian limestone, with sandstone and limestone also used in the north wall. A southern chapel was added in 1446. After the tower fell in 1670, the building was renovated in 1686, and a new Gothic-style western tower was begun in 1712. It now contains six bells. Other notable details include an east window with glass by Charles Eamer Kempe and boards bearing the Ten Commandments.
