About St Chad
St Chad is a Church of England church in York, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to the seventh-century saint, it has Anglican roots and developed from provision made for local worship at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Anglican services were initially held in a village schoolroom built in 1875. A Congregationalist chapel dating from 1840 was adapted as a chapel of ease in 1901 and given the dedication to St Chad. The present building followed in 1934, designed by E. Priestley Cooper and constructed from Oxclose stone. Its furnishings came from several other sites: the font and lectern originated in Ryton, while the oak reredos was brought from Welburn Hall. Robert Thompson designed the altar rails, and the pews previously stood in All Saints’ Church, Kirkbymoorside. The organ came from a Methodist church in Scarborough. Stained glass in the sanctuary portrays St Chad, the Crucifixion and the Annunciation.
