About Christ Church
Christ Church is the Church of England parish church serving Appleton-le-Moors in North Yorkshire, in the York area. It remains the village’s parish church and has been protected at Grade I since 1985, recognising its exceptional architectural significance.
Mrs J. Shepherd commissioned the church in memory of her husband during the 1860s. Designed by John Loughborough Pearson, it was built between 1863 and 1866 in an early French Gothic style. Limestone walls and slate roofing are complemented by Rosedale ironstone details inside. The plan includes an aisled nave, entrance narthex, apsidal chancel, northern chapel and a steeple on the south-east side. Its tower supports a pyramid-shaped spire and has paired bell openings and small gabled openings. A prominent rose window above the western entrance contains Clayton and Bell stained glass representing Christian virtues. The same firm created the other glass and the pink Classical-style sgraffito decoration. Further features include lancet windows, a hammerbeam roof and a font positioned between two western doorways.
