About Church of St Helen
The Church of St Helen is the Church of England parish church serving Stillingfleet in North Yorkshire. Dating from around 1145, it remains an active place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1966.
Built in Magnesian limestone, the church retains its original nave, chancel and southern porch. A northern aisle, St Anne’s Chapel and the lower tower were added during the 13th century, followed by the Moreby Chapel in 1336. Later alterations included rebuilding the tower’s upper stages and extensive restoration by C. Hodgson Fowler between 1875 and 1884. A particularly notable feature is the ancient door, possibly made in the 10th century, with iron decoration depicting figures, a vessel, a tree and a cross. Interior details include a medieval knight’s effigy, a 1613 alabaster memorial, early 16th-century stained glass, an organ and three bells dating from 1626 and 1747.
