About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary in Ellerton, North Yorkshire, is a former Anglican place of worship and a Grade II listed building. It ceased regular use in 1978 and was later saved from proposed demolition by the Ellerton Church Preservation Trust.

A priory was established at Ellerton in the early 1200s, and its site became home to the parish church following the suppression of the monasteries. The earlier building was replaced in 1846–48 by John Loughborough Pearson’s Decorated Gothic church. Constructed from stone in several shades, it has a Westmorland slate covering, a nave, south porch, chancel and northern vestry. A twin-arched bellcote rises above the western gable, supported by circular shafts and capped with a pyramid-shaped stone roof. After closure, the fittings were taken out in 1984 and medieval stained glass was moved to Selby Abbey. Peter Pace later designed a gradual restoration, which added replacement glazing and new interior fittings.
