About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church in Ellerton, North Yorkshire. It remains in ecclesiastical use and is protected as a Grade I listed building, recognising its exceptional historic and architectural significance.
The church largely dates from the later 12th or early 13th century. Its most distinctive feature is the Norman arch between the nave and chancel, decorated with chevron patterns and unusual carved beak-heads. The building comprises a nave with a northern aisle, a chancel, a south porch and a low, battlemented tower. The tower, built in the Perpendicular style, was added in 1536 and carries carved shields, an inscription linked with the Pilgrimage of Grace, and a newt motif associated with the Aske family. The chancel was reconstructed in 1839 and reduced in length in 1963, while Demaine and Brierley undertook extensive restoration from 1891 to 1893. Medieval brasses in the chancel commemorate Robert Aske and his wife Margaret.
