About Church of St James

The Church of St James is an Anglican parish church serving Selby in North Yorkshire. Finished in December 1867, it became the centre of a newly created parish before that month ended. It has held Grade II listed status since 1980.

James Audus provided the funding and possibly helped shape the design, though the work is attributed to Newstead and Low. Stone walls support a slate covering decorated along the ridge with tiles. Its layout incorporates an elevated nave lit above the aisles, two transepts and porches, a chancel, vestry and tower at the western end. During May 1944, a Halifax bomber collided with the original spire, causing the deaths of the aircrew and eight people in surrounding homes. The tower was reconstructed afterwards, without replacing the spire. Inside are a notable lectern combining timber and brass, a marble screen behind the altar, abundant Victorian joinery and an iron barrier at the communion space.
