About Church of St Mary, Selby
The Church of St Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Selby, North Yorkshire. Opened in 1856, it continues the town’s Catholic presence established by a Mass house on Ousegate in 1791. The church has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1980.
Funded by Laura Marie Petre and designed by Charles Hansom, the church is constructed from sandstone, with pale limestone details and slate roofing. Its plan includes aisles, a clerestoried nave, chancel, south transept, sacristy, octagonal baptistry and chapel, and a south-west tower topped by a broach spire. Surviving original fittings include the stone altar, font, pulpit and reredos, while William Wailes created the stained glass in the east window. The north aisle was enlarged westwards in 1931 to form a Lourdes-style grotto, built with rough boulders and containing stone from Lourdes. Later alterations included work at the east end during the 1970s and a new hall, linked by a glazed passage, in 2004.
