About Congregational Chapel And House On South Side
Congregational Chapel And House On South Side is a historic church in Selby, North Yorkshire. Grade II listed since 1980, the building is now used by King’s Church, which has occupied it fully since the United Reformed Church departed in 2012.
The chapel was built after popular preaching in Selby during 1808 and opened the following March. Galleries followed in 1812, while a vestry and schoolroom were constructed to the south in 1842. James Pigott Pritchett remodelled the frontage and refurbished the chapel in 1866, and further work was undertaken in 1977. Its polychrome brick façade has stone detailing, with rendered walls elsewhere and a Welsh slate roof. Brick piers divide the three-bay main section, whose gabled centre features four rounded arches and a prominent rose window centred on a quatrefoil. The former schoolroom stands to the left.
