About Church of St Michael
The Church of St Michael is an active Church of England parish church in Beverley, East Riding of Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1966.
A place of worship was recorded here in the Domesday survey. The oldest surviving fabric is the 15th-century western tower, while most of the church was reconstructed in 1863 to plans by James Mallinson and Thomas Healey. The rebuilding retained earlier materials and broadly followed the previous layout, with a vestry added. Designed in the Gothic Revival manner, the church is built mainly from cobbles, with red brick, stone detailing and slate roofing. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, south porch and a pair of transepts. The three-level tower features angled buttresses, traceried bell openings and a turreted parapet. Inside are a carved figure dating from around 1100, possibly depicting Saint Michael, and a stoup discovered in the churchyard.
