About Church of St Laurence

The Church of St Laurence is the Church of England parish church serving Scalby, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has held Grade II* listed status since 1985, reflecting its particular historic and architectural importance.

Elements surviving from around 1180 include the arch between the nave and chancel and the arcade on the nave’s southern side. The chancel was reconstructed in the early 1200s, while the nave’s north wall dates from a 15th-century rebuilding. A west tower was probably erected in 1683, and substantial restoration and enlargement followed in 1859–60, including a new south wall and porch. Built in sandstone beneath stone flags, the church also contains a mediaeval font, several wall memorials from the 18th century and a possibly 13th-century stone slab bearing a carved cross.
