About Church of Saint Michael

The Church of Saint Michael is a Church of England parish church serving Cherry Burton, near Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1968.

A medieval place of worship previously occupied the site and was repaired in 1842. It was taken down in 1852–53 and replaced by the present Gothic Revival building, designed by Charles Vickers, with construction overseen by Horace Jones. Sandstone walls, limestone detailing and slate roofing form a nave with clerestory, north aisle and porch, chancel, vestry and western tower. The three-level tower includes buttresses, an octagonal stair turret, clock face, pointed bell openings and a battlemented top. Interior features include a carved stone pulpit with five sides and a round font supported by an eight-sided pier. Temple Moore designed the choir seating added in 1891, while several stained-glass windows are by Charles Eamer Kempe.
