About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Church of England parish church in Folkton, within the Scarborough area of North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966, recognising its particular architectural and historic importance.

Originating in the middle of the 12th century, the church retains a Norman north entrance and part of the original arch leading into the chancel. Much of the building was reconstructed during the 13th century, including the lower levels of its western tower. Built of sandstone and roofed in slate, it comprises a nave, chancel and three-stage tower, which has corner buttresses, a stair turret, pointed bell openings and a battlemented parapet. Later changes included shortening the chancel in 1772, narrowing the nave, replacing the eastern window in 1854 and rebuilding the tower’s upper section from 1877 to 1881. Further restoration followed in the 1890s. Notable survivals include fragments of medieval glass and a Norman tub-shaped font.
