About St Charles Borromeo, Hull
St Charles Borromeo, Hull is an active Roman Catholic parish church in the Diocese of Middlesbrough. Located in Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, it is the city’s earliest Catholic parish church established after the Reformation. The building is listed at Grade I, following its elevation from Grade II* in 2016.
Catholic worship in Hull was supported from the 1770s, although an early chapel in Posterngate was destroyed during unrest in 1780. A later chapel in North Street was funded by the French priest Pierre Foucher. His successor, John Smith, secured land in Jarratt Street for the present church, which opened on 29 July 1829. John Earle began the architectural work, with J. J. Scoles remodelling the building soon afterwards. Aisles were added later, and the interior decoration was undertaken in 1899. The organ, acquired around 1866, had previously served churches in Hull and York before being rebuilt in 1909 and altered again in 1959.
