About St Pancras, Ipswich
St Pancras, Ipswich is a Roman Catholic church in Orwell Place, near the heart of the Suffolk town. Open as a parish church today, it was designed by George Goldie and built in 1861. The red-brick building is protected at Grade II and now forms part of the Diocese of East Anglia.
Much of the construction cost came from Louis Simon, a French priest who arrived in Ipswich in 1793 after leaving revolutionary France. The church reflects the Gothic revival and has a slate-covered roof, an intricate timber ceiling and its first wooden pews. Red and white brick arches alternate within the nave and sanctuary. Features include carved figures of Christ with the four Gospel writers behind the principal altar, and a marble altar in the Lady Chapel. An organ made in 1891 occupies the west gallery, which required extensive reconstruction following deliberate fire damage in 1985. Danielle Hopkinson, an Ipswich artist, created the later rose window commemorating the millennium.
