About St Mary, Woodbridge Road
St Mary, Woodbridge Road is a Roman Catholic church in Ipswich, Suffolk, within the Diocese of East Anglia. It serves the town’s largest Catholic congregation and has the second-largest congregation in Suffolk. The parish hall occupies the former St Antony’s chapel, the earliest Catholic place of worship established in Ipswich after the Reformation.
The parish was founded by Abbé Louis Pierre Simon, a French priest who fled the dangers of the French Revolution and came to Ipswich as a teacher. Supported by his friend Margaret Wood, he brought local Catholics together and later purchased a house on Albion Hill, now Woodbridge Road. A small chapel dedicated to St Antony was added despite local opposition and consecrated by Dr Thomas Walsh on 1 August 1827. As the community grew, it was enlarged northwards and southwards, with a new 76-foot nave facing Woodbridge Road. Dr Walsh blessed the expanded church on 10 October 1838, when it was dedicated to St Mary. Plaques in the parish hall commemorate Simon and Wood.
