Suffolk's wool wealth built some of England's finest parish churches, the great glass-filled naves of Lavenham, Long Melford and Southwold among them. Bury St Edmunds grew around one of medieval Europe's most powerful abbeys, and its cathedral tower, completed in 2005, is a rare modern addition to the skyline.
