About St Mark
St Mark is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Chantry area of Ipswich, Suffolk. The parish sits within East Anglia’s Catholic diocese and remains responsible for serving Holy Family Catholic Church in the nearby village of Brantham.
The church was inaugurated in May 1959. Previously, local Catholics belonged to St Pancras parish in Ipswich and received ministry from Franciscan friars stationed in East Bergholt, who had pastoral duties in Brantham as well. During the early 1970s, the majority of that community relocated to Canterbury, while several friars formed a smaller house in Ipswich. Franciscan involvement concluded in 1994. A Catholic primary school bearing the parish’s name was established in 1967. In 2018, its pupils secured first place in Suffolk’s junior-school mock trial contest.
