About Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall
The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall stands at Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex and is one of England’s oldest churches with much of its early fabric surviving. This Church of England chapel is a Grade I listed building under the care of Chelmsford Cathedral. Services are held regularly, and the nearby Othona Community also worships there. It is the destination of the annual Bradwell Pilgrimage and the final point on St Peter’s Way.
Bishop Cedd founded the chapel in 654 during his mission to the East Saxons, building it across the remains of the deserted Roman fort at Othona. The surviving structure probably dates from between 654 and 662, with masonry taken from the fort incorporated into its walls. After fire damage, it was repaired and used into the Tudor period, before later serving as a barn; the blocked opening for a broad barn entrance remains visible in the nave’s south wall. The building was restored and reconsecrated in 1920, then repaired again after wartime damage.
