About St Oswald
St Oswald is an active Church of England parish church in East Stoke, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and stands beside Stoke Hall. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Originating in either the 13th or 14th century, the building was substantially reconstructed in 1738. Work to restore the chancel followed in 1873, while much of the interior furniture dates from the 19th century. Stoke Field, the site of a nearby battle, lies around three minutes away by car. Local tradition holds that people killed in the fighting were buried within the church grounds.
