About St Lawrence's Church, Thorpe
St Lawrence's Church, Thorpe is a Church of England parish church in Thorpe, near Newark in Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the united benefice that also includes Farndon, Hawton and Cotham. Services were held every few months in 2015, and access is by a footpath crossing the former rectory drive. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building for its architectural and historic significance.
The compact building stands on raised ground and retains a substantial tower dating from the 12th century. During the Victorian era, the Revd William Wood oversaw extensive restoration and also commissioned the nearby rectory. Abolitionist Lucy Townsend lived there with her husband, the rector Charles Townsend. She died in Thorpe in 1847 and lies in a large enclosed grave beside the entrance; her husband was later buried at the church as well.
