About St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist is an active Church of England parish church in Collingham, in the Newark area of Nottinghamshire. With origins in about 1150, it is protected as a Grade I listed building and forms part of a wider group of local parishes.
The church underwent repairs led by the rector, Joseph Mayor, in 1846, followed by extensive restoration under J. H. Hakewill in 1862 and 1863. This later work removed the gallery, repaired the arches, heightened the chancel walls and added a timber roof. The windows received cathedral glass and fresh stonework, while memorials were repaired. New pine furnishings included a pulpit and lectern, alongside an oak altar rail and additional timber seating. The tower was restored in 1886, with further work completed in 1890. Five bells cast by Thomas Mears date to 1841. The organ was enlarged in 1863 and replaced by a Wordsworth and Maskell instrument in 1883.
