About St Michael & All Angels
St Michael & All Angels is a Church of England church on Bull Brigg Lane in Whitwell, Rutland. Its historic and architectural significance is recognised through its designation as a Grade II* listed building.
Christian worship has taken place on the site since at least 1086, when a church was recorded in the Domesday Book. The present building includes a nave, chancel, south aisle and porch, together with a bell-cote for two bells. The chancel was probably reconstructed during the 13th century, when the bell-cote was also introduced. In the following century, the nave’s north wall was heightened and the church received replacement windows and a new roof. Restoration work followed in 1881, while the chapel was restored in 1930. A wall tablet commemorates former rector Charles Spencer Ellicott and was installed by his son, Charles Ellicott, Bishop of Bristol and Gloucester.
