About Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Newark-on-Trent
The Church of St. Mary Magdalene is an active Church of England parish church in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it is a Grade I listed building and the tallest structure in the town. Nine services are held each week, alongside programmes for children and young people. Its musical tradition includes an organ, ten bells and a choir established in 1532.
A church has occupied the site for around a millennium, and the current building is the third. Extensive rebuilding took place around 1180, when the surviving crypt was created. The Gothic church is constructed from dressed stone, with a nave, chancel, aisles, clerestory, transepts and chapels. Its west tower dates to about 1220, while the octagonal spire was added roughly a century later. Much of the nave and chancel belongs to the 15th century, followed by additional chapels and transepts in the early 16th century. Sir George Gilbert Scott led a substantial restoration during the 19th century, with further work undertaken in the 20th.
