About Saint Peter's Church
Saint Peter’s Church is an Anglican church on Main Street in Oakham, Leicestershire. Part of the Church of England, it is protected at Grade II* and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust.
The oldest surviving parts date from around the mid-1100s, while the western tower was added during the 1400s. Its stone walls are covered by roofs of Welsh slate. After the aisles were removed in the 16th century, they were reconstructed during work carried out in 1862–63, when the deteriorating northern arcade was also repaired. This two-bay Norman arcade has circular columns and arches with zigzag carving. Other features include a 15th-century font, fragments of medieval glass, Victorian glass in the eastern window and four bells, the earliest cast in 1597. The battlemented tower carries a small spire and weather vane.
