About St Mary's
St Mary's is a Roman Catholic church in York, North Yorkshire. The church continues to serve within the Roman Catholic denomination.
Austin Bateman established the church as a foundation connected with Ampleforth Abbey. Completed in 1894, its Gothic Revival design may be the work of Bernard Smith. The building uses local stone and has a pantiled roof, with a porch of wood and glass reached by two flights of steps. Trefoil windows, a statue niche, a quatrefoil and a date stone enrich the gabled frontage, which is crowned by a small bellcote with a pyramidal cap. A Decorated Gothic window marks the eastern end. Inside is a single white-walled space containing eight Stations of the Cross, carved by Rosamund Fletcher in 1980 and placed there in 1990. A small sacristy opens from the sanctuary.
