About Church of Our Lady
The Church of Our Lady stands on Cornlands Road in Acomb, York, and serves the local Roman Catholic parish. Built with seating for 400 people, it remains a place of parish worship in this North Yorkshire suburb.
Catholic services began in Acomb’s secondary school in 1941. Peter Langtry-Langton and J. H. Langtry-Langton designed the present building, completed in 1955 at a cost of £28,000. A proposed bell tower was never constructed. Modelled on a basilica of the early Christian period, the church has grey-brick walls beneath Roman-style pantiles. Its western doorway combines Doric features with brick arching and a Madonna and Child panel. Within the nave, fourteen Corinthian pillars have a marble-like finish. Changes to the sanctuary were made in 1970, followed in 1999 by its forward enlargement, removal of the communion rails and construction of an eight-sided parish room. The reredos incorporates a cross bearing Christ and a dove symbolising the Holy Spirit.
