About Church of St John the Baptist
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church in York, North Yorkshire. Built in 1870, it remains a place of parish worship and has held Grade II listed status since 1985.
Its design has been attributed either to George Gilbert Scott or to his son, George Gilbert Scott Jr. Limestone walls, sandstone detailing and Westmorland slate form the exterior, while the plan comprises a nave, southern porch, chancel and vestry. A buttress at the western end supports a four-opening bellcote. Inside is a font dating from the 13th century, transferred from All Saints in Helmsley. Temple Moore supplied the chancel screen and further fittings in 1898 and 1899. An uncommon hypocaust-inspired system once circulated heat beneath the floor from a coke stove, with fuel transported along a 25-foot tunnel by miniature railway. The heating was restored in 2012.
