About Holy Trinity Church, Barkston Ash
Holy Trinity Church, Barkston Ash is a Church of England church at Scarthingwell in North Yorkshire. Consecrated under its present dedication in 1974, it continues to belong to the Sherburn parish.
The village lacked its own worship space until the Victorian period and was served by All Saints’ Church at Sherburn in Elmet. In 1869, Sherburn’s vicar received permission to lead worship in a village house, though sacraments were not permitted there. William Bakewell subsequently designed a chapel of ease. Work began with the laying of the first stone on 13 October 1873, and additional ground was purchased during 1874. Construction reached completion around 1880. The church gained a pipe organ in 1907 and was connected to electricity in 1939.
