About Church of St Helen
The Church of St Helen is a Church of England parish church in Escrick, south of York in North Yorkshire. The present building remains in use for worship and has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
A church in Escrick is documented from 1252, although the current stone building dates from 1857. Designed by Francis Penrose in the Perpendicular style, it replaced a Classical brick church consecrated in 1783. A vestry followed in 1896. After fire destroyed the interior fittings in 1923, John Bilson directed a swift restoration, allowing worship to resume in 1925. Architectural features include a five-bay nave, north aisle, apsidal chancel, north-east tower, battlements, buttresses and carved gargoyles. The western apse contains a baptistery and chapel above a crypt. Bilson designed the windows behind the altar. Monuments include a damaged medieval knight, possibly Roger de Lascelles, and memorials to Beilby Thompson and Jane Lawley. The church also contains twelve bells.
