About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church in York, North Yorkshire. Dating principally from the medieval period, it remains in parish use and has held Grade I listed status since 1955.
Its earliest surviving fabric is a twelfth-century section of the chancel’s south wall. The nave and its arcades followed during the thirteenth century, around the recorded construction date of 1250, with the aisles and porch added in the fourteenth century and modified later. Built from limestone and sandstone beneath stone-flagged roofs, the church has a clerestoried nave, a chancel, a two-storey south porch and a three-stage western tower. The tower’s upper levels were reconstructed in 1802. George Gilbert Scott directed restoration work from 1873 to 1875, including substantial renewal of the chancel and the addition of a Lady Chapel and vestry. Interior features include medieval sedilia, a Jacobean reredos, screens by Scott and Temple Moore, and a brass commemorating Lady Brooke, who died in 1600.
