About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church serving Ryther cum Ossendyke, in the York area of North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.
Its origins lie around the Norman Conquest, with a church at the site noted in the Domesday Book. Possible early survivals include carved masonry, reused window heads and perhaps the rounded arch leading to the chancel. The nave dates largely from a 13th-century rebuilding, while the chancel and south aisle were developed in the following century. Further work took place in 1773 and 1843. During a substantial restoration by C. Hodgson Fowler in 1898, the brick tower gave way to a bell turret, and a replacement roof, east window and south porch were added. Limestone and gritstone form the walls beneath a tiled roof. Interior features include an early font, a 15th-century piscina, a hagioscope and five old stone altars bearing worn carvings associated with Christ’s wounds.
