About Roman Catholic Church of St Anne
The Roman Catholic Church of St Anne stands in Ugthorpe, North Yorkshire, England. Serving the village’s Roman Catholic community, it has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 2014.
Catholic worship in Ugthorpe dates to 1679, when a chapel occupied the upper floor of the priest’s home. A separate place of worship followed in 1810, becoming a school when the present church opened in 1855. George Goldie designed the neo-Gothic building, supported financially by the Nelson family. Constructed from sandstone and roofed in Welsh slate, it has an aisled nave, clerestory, chancel, sacristy and a western tower incorporating the entrance porch. Notable details include a statue above the pointed entrance, a Calvary beside the tower, original seating and a painted stone altar. John Hardman Powell created the stained glass in the windows at the eastern and western ends; two further aisle windows may also be his work.
