About Saint Mary the Virgin
Saint Mary the Virgin is the Church of England parish church for Beighton, within Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Set close to the High Street, it remains in use for the parish and is recognised as a Grade II* listed building. Its dedication honours Mary, the mother of Christ, and its ministry is shared with St James Woodhouse.
A church probably stood here by about 1150, though the fabric of that first building has disappeared. The arch opening into the tower may belong to the 1200s, and the northern aisle is likely to be 15th-century work. During substantial renovations in 1867 and 1868, the chancel and southern aisle were reconstructed on their earlier foundations, while the clerestory and western gallery were removed. Features of interest include a narrow viewing opening beside the chancel, historic memorial brasses, Ninian Comper’s rood and a northern entrance linked with an old baptismal custom. Investigations in 2006 revealed a buried stone pavement believed to date from the early 1500s.
