About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Church of England church in Hackenthorpe, a suburb of Sheffield in South Yorkshire. It occupies a site beside Sheffield Road. Outside is Hackenthorpe’s Grade II-listed war memorial, which records local people who died during the First and Second World Wars.
The church was completed in 1899 and dedicated on 11 November that year. Its construction followed donations from local residents and benefactors, including £500 from the Earl Manvers and £250 from James Hounsfield of Hackenthorpe Hall. The Earl also pledged the one-acre site. Viscount Newark laid the foundation stone on 4 June 1898; beneath it were placed contemporary documents, a newspaper and a coin. Plans included an arch for a chapel, but structural work and limited finances prevented its completion, leaving the opening sealed with brick. Before the church opened, Anglican residents of Hackenthorpe worshipped at St Mary the Virgin in Beighton.
