About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church at Scarthingwell, North Yorkshire, serving Saxton. Founded in the 11th century and dated to 1050, it is protected as a Grade I listed building, a designation awarded in 1967.
The earliest surviving sections are the nave and chancel, built when the church functioned as a subsidiary place of worship for the parish at Sherburn in Elmet. The southern chapel was created during the 1300s, and the western tower followed in the early 1400s. Restoration in 1867 included construction of the vestry, with further repairs undertaken in 1907. Features include a round-headed Norman entrance with carved capitals, three lancets of graduated height at the eastern end, and a medieval octagonal font. An aumbry from about 1180 and several historic memorials also remain. Lord Dacre, killed during the Battle of Towton in 1461, has a limestone tomb in the churchyard.
