About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church in Scarthingwell, North Yorkshire. Originating around 1150, it continues in its parochial role and has held Grade I listed protection since 1967.
Constructed from Magnesian limestone, the building preserves its Norman nave and elements of the northern aisle, with several substantial stones possibly taken from an Anglo-Saxon predecessor. The chancel was created during the 1200s, followed by aisle alterations in the 1300s and a southern chapel in the next century. Anthony Salvin oversaw restoration in 1857, adding the vestry and renewing much of the porch while retaining older chevron-carved stonework. The later-raised tower is crowned with battlements and strengthened by Victorian buttresses. Notable furnishings and memorials include medieval glass in the west window, a grave cover from the 1300s, the two-part Janus Cross and a tablet commemorating Peter Foljambe. Brindley and Foster built the organ in 1875, while the bell collection combines Georgian and Victorian examples.
