About Church of St Mary the Virgin
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Scarthingwell, North Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1967, recognising its exceptional architectural and historic interest.
The earliest surviving fabric dates to around 1230, with a tower first added about a decade later. Originally dedicated to St John the Baptist, the church subsequently took its present dedication. Built from limestone beneath slate roofing, it has a compact cross-shaped plan, three-bay nave, two-bay chancel and transepts, and a tower above the central crossing. Alterations followed during the 14th century, while the 15th century brought further work, including a new tower. George Fowler Jones directed restoration in 1844, and George Pace oversaw another in 1966. Notable furnishings include a medieval altar, a 13th-century piscina and font bowl, a 15th-century screen, Jacobean chairs and an oak table from the 17th century. Stained glass was installed in 1859 and 1929.
