St Mary’s on Castle Road serves as an Anglican parish church in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Set above the historic town and beneath Scarborough Castle, it dates from the medieval period and remains in use today. The church is recognised as a Grade I listed building.
Founded during the 1100s, with a recorded construction date of 1150, the building was formerly much larger and had both central and western towers. It suffered extensive damage in the 1645 siege of Scarborough Castle, when artillery was exchanged between the castle and positions in the churchyard. Reconstruction followed later that century, including a replacement tower completed in 1670, while substantial restoration took place during the Victorian period. Surviving features include an eastern square tower, stone-vaulted chapels along the south side and many memorials from the late Georgian and early Victorian eras. A seven-panel east window by York glassmaker Harry Stammers was added in 1958, illustrating creation giving praise to its maker.
