About St Martin-on-the-Hill, Scarborough
St Martin-on-the-Hill serves as an active Anglican parish church in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The building holds Grade I listed status, awarded in June 1973, reflecting its architectural and artistic importance.
George Frederick Bodley designed the church, which was erected during 1862 and 1863. Its layout includes a clerestoried nave, chancel, aisle and tower on the northern side, with a saddleback-style roof and a rose window facing west. Early commissions undertaken by Morris & Co. account for much of the interior ornament and glazing. William Morris worked with Philip Webb on the painted chancel ceiling, while Edward Burne-Jones created the Adoration of the Magi behind the altar. Ten illustrated pulpit panels were produced by Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ford Madox Brown. Bodley returned in 1889 to introduce the rood screen and reredos. A Henry Willis organ was fitted the following year. German naval shelling damaged the building in December 1914, but scheduled services proceeded.
