About Primitive Methodist Chapel
The Primitive Methodist Chapel is a Grade II listed former place of worship in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. The congregation closed the building in 1981 after its membership had fallen. It was adapted as Staithes Museum in 1993, presenting the area’s industrial, maritime and artistic history, including James Cook’s association with the village.
Primitive Methodism was established locally during the 1820s. A chapel opened in 1858 but soon became inadequate, leading to the construction of a larger neighbouring building in 1880 and the conversion of the earlier chapel into a Sunday school. The later structure is stone-built, with a Welsh slate roof, two floors and a five-bay frontage. Its central section projects beneath a pediment containing a circular opening, while arched entrances and windows are framed by decorative stonework. Cast-iron railings with fleur-de-lys details stand outside. The building received listed status in 1973.
