About Old All Saints Church, Skelton-in-Cleveland
Old All Saints Church, Skelton-in-Cleveland, is a former Anglican place of worship near Skelton Castle in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. Built in 1785 and protected at Grade II*, it is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust.
John Hall-Stevenson rebuilt the church on the location of a 14th-century predecessor founded by the Fauconberg family, retaining part of the earlier chancel’s north wall. Constructed from sandstone and roofed with Lakeland slate, the building has a three-stage western tower crowned by a battlemented parapet. Inside are enclosed pews, a three-tier pulpit with a sounding board, and a timber gallery supported by slender fluted columns. Memorials from the 17th and 18th centuries include those associated with the Trotter family, while other historic features include painted scriptural panels, three medieval stone coffins and a decorated coffin cover. The roofs were repaired and given new slates in 1911.
