About Church of St Hilda
The Church of St Hilda is a Church of England parish church in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire. It remains a place of parish worship and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1969.
Christian use of the site dates from the Saxon era, followed by a rebuilding in the 1100s. The earlier building was replaced by the present stone church in 1773, with its western tower reconstructed in 1817 and further restoration undertaken in 1895. Welsh slate covers the roof, while the plan comprises a nave, chancel and two-stage tower with a battlemented parapet. Surviving details include Saxon sculpture and a fragment of a Norman piscina. An oak Gothic screen stands inside, and the gallery and organ at the west end came from Selby Abbey. The churchyard also contains St Hilda’s Well, thought to be medieval and restored in 1912.
