About St Michael's

St Michael’s is the Church of England parish church serving Malton in North Yorkshire. It stands in the Market Place and remains the town’s parish church. The building holds Grade II* status, with its designation dating from 1951.

Constructed around 1150, the church retains substantial parts of its medieval nave. Its sandstone walls are covered by slate roofs, while the west tower was added during the 15th century, when the nave was also reduced slightly in length. The chancel was reconstructed in 1858. Further work overseen by George Fowler Jones in 1883 included rebuilding the southern arcade and the nave’s eastern end, removing two galleries and creating transepts. The southern side underwent reconstruction in 1966, and the north aisle received a replacement roof around 1986. Interior details include a font from the 17th century and a 20th-century screen separating the nave from the southern chapel.
