About Ss Leonard & Mary, Malton

Ss Leonard & Mary, Malton is an active Roman Catholic parish church in Malton, North Yorkshire, under the Diocese of Middlesbrough. The Grade II* listed medieval building is England’s earliest church still in Catholic ownership and preserves no fewer than 24 carved medieval figures.

The church originated in the twelfth century as a dependent place of worship for the Gilbertine community at nearby Malton Priory. A tower was added during the fifteenth century; its original masonry spire was eventually replaced with a timber structure covered in slate. Eight bells cast by Lester and Pack arrived in 1768, followed by a clock marking Queen Victoria’s 1897 jubilee. Charles Hodgson Fowler oversaw extensive work in 1907, including alterations to the windows and reconstruction along the nave and chancel’s southern sides. Transferred from Anglican to Catholic ownership in 1971, the church then received its joint dedication and a stained-glass window from Malton’s former St Mary’s chapel.
