About Church of St Nicholas

The Church of St Nicholas is a Church of England parish church in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Yorkshire, serving Roxby. It remains the village’s parish church and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1990.

A medieval chapel serving Roxby was rebuilt for Thomas Boynton around 1520. The present church originated in the 17th century, underwent substantial reconstruction in 1818, and was restored during the early 20th century. Built from sandstone and roofed with Lakeland slate, it has a combined nave and chancel with a three-stage tower at the western end. Notable details include the tower’s round-headed entrance, paired-light windows and battlemented corners, together with a five-light east window. Inside are wooden pews and a pulpit thought to date from the 1818 work, a brass commemorating Boynton, two grave slabs from the 1600s, and a medieval font dating from the 13th century.
