About St Peter's
St Peter’s is an active Church of England parish church in Malton, North Yorkshire, associated with the neighbouring town of Norton-on-Derwent. It was added to the statutory list at Grade II in 1967.
Norton’s medieval place of worship, which bore the name of Saint Nicholas, was pulled down in 1814 and succeeded by a plain, towerless structure. Today’s church was designed by C. Hodgson Fowler and constructed between 1889 and 1891 using sandstone and slate. Its plan incorporates a clerestoried nave flanked by aisles, a chancel, chapel, vestry and organ chamber. At the western end stands a four-storey tower crowned with battlements and ornate pinnacles. A font dating from the 1100s, formerly discarded and kept as a garden ornament, was later brought back inside. Walter Brierley created the pulpit and its canopy, while Charles Eamer Kempe produced two stained-glass windows, including an eastern memorial to the Second Boer War.
