About Church of St John
The Church of St John is a Church of England parish church serving Welburn-on-Derwent, in the York area of North Yorkshire. Historically, the village formed part of the parish centred on St Martin’s Church in Bulmer. The church remains the village parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1966.
Built between 1859 and 1865, the church was funded by George Howard, 7th Earl of Carlisle, as a memorial to his mother, Georgiana Howard. James Mallinson and Thomas Healey designed the sandstone and slate building in the Early English style at a cost of £2,000. Its cross-shaped layout includes a nave, chancel, two transepts and a vestry. A three-stage tower rises into a broach spire with openings, a cross and a weathervane. The original interior fittings remain, while stained glass includes an east window by Hardman & Co and west-window glass installed in 1866 to commemorate the 7th Earl.
